Language Learning Unit

Keele’s ELU provides individual and group language and academic skills guidance for international students at all levels—whether undergraduate, postgraduate, foundation year or PhD researchers, from beginners to near-native speakers.  Our credit-bearing modules are designed to help students develop the skills essential for success with their studies and research, and bookable ‘One-to-One’ tutorials ensure as-needed, personalised English language support year-round.

The ELU also runs core modules for students on the Humanities, Social Science, International and Accelerated International Foundation Programmes, a teacher training course leading to the Trinity College London CertTESOL (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), the Keele Pre-sessional Academic English Programme, modules in British cultural studies and intercultural communication and, in conjunction with Keele’s Global Education Team, short on-site language and culture programmes for overseas partner universities.

For international postgraduates, the English Language Unit provides a range of modules at various levels, each specifically designed to meet the needs of postgraduate students and researchers and scheduled at times that are convenient to them.

Modules focus on developing the language and academic skills international postgraduate students and researchers will rely upon for success on their degree programmes, including writing and research skills, avoiding plagiarism, handling large quantities of reading, spoken expression and understanding British academic conventions.

Modules are offered on a 1- or 2-semester basis and enrolment is made by recommendation of the English Language Unit.  There are no additional fees for these modules and a Certificate of Completion is awarded to successful candidates at the conclusion of each module.
